Join us for a reading by members of Suppose an Eyes, a poetry workshop sponsored by the Kelly Writers House. The workshop takes its name from a "portrait" in Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons. Suppose An Eyes has two main goals: to provide a supportive place for poets to share and improve their writing and to organize readings where poets can present their work to the public. The group was founded in 1999 and is one of the longest running poetry workshops in the Philly area. The group has a diverse membership with poets of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds.

Join us for a celebration of The Classroom and the Crowd by Kelly Writers House Faculty Director Al Filreis. For more than a decade, Filreis has taught a free online course about experimental poetry, known as “ModPo,” that has drawn some 435,000 students from 179 countries. Online classes even a fraction of ModPo’s size have been criticized as impersonal and unengaging. But the citizens of ModPo have formed a generous and enduring intellectual community as together they read poems typically dismissed as difficult and inaccessible. In The Classroom and the Crowd, Filreis reflects on his decades of experience as a founder of participatory literary communities and teacher of online courses, demonstrating that student-centered education offers new possibilities for humane social networking.
Al Filreis is Kelly Family Professor of English, founding faculty director of the Kelly Writers House, director of the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing, codirector of PennSound, and publisher of Jacket2 magazine, all at the University of Pennsylvania. His recent books include 1960: When Art and Literature Confronted the Memory of World War II and Remade the Modern (Columbia, 2021), and he is the host of the podcast PoemTalk.

Throughout the ancient Mediterranean, people left small offerings for their gods to express thanks for good things or request help to overcome bad things. These votives took many forms, but the most popular were terracotta figurines of humans (or just body parts!), plants, animals, or even the gods themselves.
Join Brigitte Keslinke, Ph.D. Candidate in Penn's Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World program, to explore how and why people in the ancient Mediterranean made votives, then use air-dry clay to sculpt your own miniature offerings.

The Explore. Reflect. Become Lunch Series focuses on the deep reflection of our personal experiences and the becoming of ourselves. We will invite individuals from Penn and the Philadelphia community to share their intimate histories and backgrounds and how they've explored, reflected, and become the person that they are.
About the Speaker:
Barbara Gao Shapiro graduated from Penn in 2012 as a dual degree student, concentrating in Finance in Wharton and majoring in Economic History in the College. Together with a Penn GSE alum, she founded Blueprint to Great Schools, a strategic consulting firm advising K-12 education leaders to rapidly achieve their institutional goals. Prior to starting her own company, she led a charter school network’s college access and persistence program from serving 26 students to over 1,000 students, while maintaining 100% acceptance to 4 year colleges for a student body of mostly first-gen students of color. Barbara started her career on Wall Street as a hedge fund analyst and investment banker. At Penn, she was a Vice-Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee, an RA in Ware, and a founding sister of Zeta Tau Alpha. She is the daughter of Chinese immigrants, and grew up in Arizona. Today, she lives with her husband (also a Penn alum), son, cat, and dog on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She serves on the Penn Alumni Board of Directors. You can often find her performing in community theater and choir, or appearing on a game show.
Known for raw, intensely physical and cinematic choreography, Compagnie Virginie Brunelle performs in Philadelphia for the first time with the U.S. premiere of Fables. This full-length work for 10 dancers and a pianist offers a poetic yet sometimes harsh vision of women’s ongoing struggle. Against the backdrop of a world in chaos, a series of evocative tableaux show female archetypes becoming larger than life in their grandeur, strength and resilience as they pave the way through invisible, yet very real barriers.
