Students in the Kelly Writers House First-Year Seminar have spent the semester discovering what it means to work in and around the "third space" of the Writers House as poets, fiction writers, journalists, and scholars. We've had readings, author visits, workshops, field trips, and excursions into the practice of literary curation - now it's our turn. Come hear a selection of works created by students themselves! All are welcome; lunch will be served.
The Kwanzaa celebration, coordinated annually by Makuu, invites the University and West Philadelphia communities to experience the rich cultural heritage of the African Diaspora. Centered on the Ngzo Saba (Seven Principles), Kwanzaa calls for the community to recommit to a spirit of collaboration, self-determination, and purpose. The celebratory feast (held a few weeks before the actual Kwanzaa holiday season, due to the academic calendar) brings together diverse scores of students, student groups, faculty, alumni, administrators, and community guests, to learn about the traditional values that Kwanzaa is built upon, and celebrate achievement – past, present, and future.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark by Lynn Nottage is a modern play set predominantly in Hollywood of the 1930's. It follows a group of young actresses who struggle with racial stereotyping in Hollywood. Vera Stark, an African-American maid, stars in a controversial antebellum film, taking the role of a slave despite her principles against taking such roles. Decades later, Vera’s groundbreaking performance is debated by scholars and film critics, interrogating Vera’s legacy in Hollywood and the impact of race on her career.
Content warning: This play includes depictions of alcoholism and discussion of drug use. The play grapples with discussions of racism, oppression, marginalization, and white privilege. We see scholarly discourse on the impact of Black people playing roles that enforce societal stereotypes and whether that is detrimental to one's own integrity and the Black community as a whole.
Take a quick study break, meet new people, and try our snacks and hot drinks!

According to Psychology Today, “Identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships, and values that create one’s sense of self. This amalgamation creates a steady sense of who one is over time, even as new facets are developed and incorporated into one’s identity.”
That simple question, “Who am I?” creates a variety of reactions, but let’s focus on disability and what has been unfolding in higher education since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. A one-person disability office has evolved into an office of ten or more staff members who specialize in addressing accommodations for students to eliminate barriers and obstacles to programs and facilities. One course on the history of the disability movement evolves into a disability studies program. Disability cultural centers represent a space for students to meet with peers and professional staff and develop programming that creates community.
More students, faculty, and staff openly discuss their disabilities as part of their identities. Disability Studies serve as a way for students to learn and discuss disability through an academic lens. Disability cultural centers provide opportunities for students to have a space, to participate in disability programming, and to be part of the movement to educate others about disability issues.
Think about how we celebrate and promote disability identity through our everyday work on university campuses. Submit a proposal that captures your vision of disability and identity in higher education. The due date for submission of proposals is November 15, 2024.
