Join us for Our Immigration Series
Tuesday, February 21, 2023 | 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Greenfield Intercultural Center (3708 Chestnut Street)
Inspired by Efrén Olivares (C'05) and his talk on "Zero Tolerance: Journeys Through Family Separation and US Immigration Policy" at Penn in September 2023, Areli Martinez Pizano started a bi-weekly series titled "Immigration Series" to continue the conversation about undocumented immigrants in the United States. The topic for the series changes each week, highlighting things like implicit bias, cultural loss, mixed-family status, and dual identity. These conversations are open to everyone who is interested in immigrant rights, undocumented immigrants, and what does it mean to be an "American" in this country.
Join us for FruiTea Conversations! The topic for each week changes. FruiTea meets weekly on Wednesday nights between 7-8 p.m. at the Greenfield Intercultural Center (fondly known as the GIC) on 3708 Chestnut Street (behind Pottruck gym).
FruiTea is an inclusive safe space dedicated to re-exploring various aspects of one’s cultural identity. Our gathering starts with people sharing their drawings on a broad ice-breaker topic. During the sharing of the ice-breaker, organic conversations then begin to flourish. Everyone is welcome to join!
Mondays are hard. Let the GIC help make Monday a little less hard. Come through on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for some FREE HOMEMADE PANCAKES by GIC Staff. Pancakes at the GIC happens on a bi-weekly basis, starting on Feb. 13, 2023. Following dates: 2/27, 3/13, 3/27, 4/10. Swing by to grab non-perishable goods from the GIC Community Pantry as well. Open to all students.
Learn about the complex and beautiful design of Buki, also known as Mandarin Squares: woven and embroidered silk emblems of rank worn on the outer coats of Chinese statesmen, military officials, and their wives for over 600 years. After a short presentation on the history of this art form by Steve Lang, Keeper of the Museum’s Asian and Oceanian collections, students will view Mandarin Squares from the Museum collection and design their own "rank” on a piece of fabric.
Free with Penncard. Dinner and materials provided.
Making Workshops are Museum-sponsored events that encourage Penn undergraduate and graduate students to become more familiar with the Museum’s collection by getting their hands involved. These events provide a fun and educational setting to promote social interaction and engage students with artifacts and ethnographic objects. Create something related to the objects or theme of the night!
