The SAS Community Forum will bring the School’s scholarly expertise to bear on current issues, offering perspective, analytical rigor, and ethical insight.

Throughout the series, we invite individuals from Penn and the greater Philadelphia community to share their personal histories and backgrounds and discuss how they have explored their identities, reflected on their experiences, and become the people they are today.
About the Speaker
Deven M. Patel is Associate Professor of Sanskrit and Classical India, Director of the Undergraduate Program in Comparative Literature, Director of the Center for Ancient Studies, and Faculty Director of College Houses and Academic Services at the University of Pennsylvania. A scholar and translator of Indian languages, he has published widely on linguistics and poetics in ancient and medieval India. He is the author of several books, including Text to Tradition: The Naishadhiyacarita and Literary Community in South Asia.

About the Speaker
Alicia Jen (she/her) is a Penn alum and a current PhD student at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Penn in 2020 with an undergraduate degree in Health & Societies, and in 2021 with a Master of Public Health degree. She aspires to pursue an academic career researching and teaching about the health and well-being of Asian Americans and children of immigrants, with her current research focusing on sex education and sexual health and identities of female Asian American college students.

Gina is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and Design. On campus she serves as co-director of the Signal Society and is involved with Bloomers Comedy, PEER, and is a SNF Paideia Ambassador. In her free time, she enjoys going on adventures with her friends, foraging, and reading.
