Pundits, scholars and ordinary people alike lament the troubling decline of democracy in the contemporary United States. Trust in democratic institutions is at a nadir while political cynicism and support for authoritarianism are on the rise. In this broader context of political malaise, where are the avenues for building a more robust democratic polity? Drawing on insights from qualitative research, Dr. Michener will highlight how building power within racially and economically marginalized communities around issues directly related to their material interests (like health and housing) is a promising pathway. Grassroots political organizing is (perhaps unexpectedly) an antidote to the social cleavages that accelerate democratic backsliding. What's more is that such organizing can forge a route to transforming both the polity and the political economy it is embedded within such that both are more attuned to communities that teeter at the margins of the existing power structures.

Join the Creative Writing Program for an evening with two fiction writers practicing at the cutting edge of their craft. Current Artist in Residence Abbey Mei Otis, whose short story collection Alien Virus Love Disaster was a finalist for the Philip K Dick Award, will be joined by Elysha Chang, author of the debut novel A Quitter’s Paradise. After the reading, Abbey and Elysha will open the floor to a Q&A about current trends in contemporary fiction.
This workshop will provide practical approaches to trans-affirming pedagogy in language classrooms. We will discuss specific strategies for creating and modifying course materials that rely on gendered terms across languages. Participants are encouraged to bring and share trans-inclusive teaching strategies and course materials that have worked well for them in previous classroom settings. Open to all language faculty, lecturers, graduate students and other instructors.
The alumni chairs from each chapter will come together to discuss their roles and brainstorm ideas for the future to engage with their alumni.
Inspired by Efrén Olivares (C'05) and his talk on "Zero Tolerance: Journeys Through Family Separation and US Immigration Policy" at Penn in September 2023, Areli Martinez Pizano started a bi-weekly series titled "Immigration Series" to continue the conversation about undocumented immigrants in the United States. The topic for the series changes each week, highlighting things like implicit bias, cultural loss, mixed-family status, and dual identity. These conversations are open to everyone who is interested in immigrant rights, undocumented immigrants, and what does it mean to be an "American" in this country.

Dr. Shatema Threadcraft will touch on segments of her new book, The Labors of Resurrection: Black Women, Necromancy and Morrisonian Democracy, which examines the phenomenon of Black Femicide as well as how Ida B. Wells, Mamie Till Bradley, Clementine Barfield, Barbara Smith and Margaret Prescod have confronted disproportionate premature Black death and made transformative democratic interventions regarding those deaths.
Lecture and discussion will be moderated by Dr. Katerina Traut, SNF Paideia Post-Doctoral Fellow.

Rockefeller Faculty Fellow at the University Center for Human Values, Princeton University. She is the author of Intimate Justice: The Black Female Body and the Body Politic, winner of the National Women’s Studies Association’s 2017 Sara A. Whaley Award for the best book on women and labor, the 2017 W.E.B. Du Bois Distinguished Book Award from the National Conference of Black Political Scientists and the 2017 Best Book Award from the American Political Science Association’s Race, Ethnicity and Politics Organized Section (Best Book in Race and Political Theory).

The weekend culminates with a full-size carnival on Saturday afternoon. The Clothesline Project is a visual display bearing witness to the impacts of sexual violence and relationship violence in our community. The shirts displayed have been created by survivors and other caring individuals to symbolize those who have been affected by interpersonal violence. The Clothesline Project is a powerful visual representation of the statistics about assault and abuse. The Project increases awareness of the impact of violence on individuals and communities, celebrates the strength of survivors, and provides an avenue for people to courageously share their stories.

Join the Kelly Writers House and Penn Violence Prevention for a Night of Empowerment! This open mic event is intended to honor and uplift the voices of survivors of all forms of interpersonal violence and harm. Survivors are welcome to share readings and creative performances about their journeys to healing. Supporters and friends are also welcome to share their experiences of offering support and care for those who have been harmed (without sharing the stories of the survivors themselves).
