About the Speaker:
Malik Muhammad (he/him) joins us as a double alum of West Chester University earning a bachelor's in Psychology with a minor in Theatre ('14) and a Masters in Higher Education Counseling and Student Affairs ('16). Join us for an appreciation of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's Dictée. Jo Park will host a gathering of local poets and scholars — Julia Bloch, Laynie Browne, Elizabeth Kim, Jena Osman, and Syd Zolf — who will each riff on a single passage from Cha's epic. Let's see where our improvisations take us, and we'll invite you to add yours!
Julia Bloch is the author of Lyric Trade: Reading the Subject in the Postwar Long Poem and three books of poetry, including Letters to Kelly Clarkson. She is a recipient of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
Laynie Browne's recent books include: Everyone & Her Resemblances, Practice Has No Sequel, Intaglio Daughters, and Letters Inscribed in Snow. She edited the anthology A Forest on Many Stems: Essays on The Poet’s Novel and co-edited I'll Drown My Book: Conceptual Writing by Women. Honors include a Pew Fellowship and the National Poetry Series Award. She teaches and coordinates the MOOC Modern Poetry at University of Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth Kim is an Assistant Professor of English at Haverford College. She earned her PhD in English Literature from Temple University and her MFA in Poetry from the Creative Writing Program at Rutgers University-Newark. Her article, “‘Crammed with Tongues’: Cosmopolitan Creole in Cathy Park Hong’s Dance Dance Revolution” is forthcoming in College Literature. Her poetry and prose have appeared in Platform Review, The Stillwater Review, The Waiting Room Reader, and American Book Review.
Josephine Nock-Hee Park is School of Arts and Sciences President’s Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, where she serves on the Steering Committee of the Asian American Studies Program and the Executive Committee of the James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies. Jena Osman's latest book is A Very Large Array: Selected Poems. She often teaches Dictee to students in her Documentary Poetics classes at Temple University.
Syd Zolf’s interdisciplinary practice queerly enacts how ethics founders on the shoals of the political, imagining other possibilities of sociality, space, and time. They have published five books of poetry, including Janey’s Arcadia, Neighbour Procedure, and Human Resources; and a selected poetry, Social Poesis. Honors include a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, a Trillium Book Award for Poetry, several major grants, and finalist for several other prizes, including two Lambda Literary Awards. Zolf’s art films have screened at venues such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam and White Cube Bermondsey. Their theoretical text, No One’s Witness: A Monstrous Poetics (Duke, 2021) was a finalist for the 2022 Pegasus Award for Poetry Criticism. Zolf teaches at the University of Pennsylvania.

The sun has set. It’s even later than Elmo Late Night. Benjamin Franklin has dried, the red LEDs of Harrison College House have turned off, the children have left Smoke’s, and your professor is… home? Nothing special goes on at this hour of the night, right? Wrong. Few know who lurks in the shadows of Penn’s Campus at night, right under our noses. Who are these agents of mischief and secrecy? Super spies! A group of students (OR ARE THEY?!?!) have infiltrated the Penn Museum to steal a top-secret document from the underground safe. Rest assured that when confronting danger, these spies are only shaken, not stirred. Will a night at the Penn Museum go by without a hitch, or will they ruin the greatest heist Penn has ever seen? How can we turn this two-way mirror into a three-way mirror? Is the vault as insecure as me? Spy for yourself in Mask and Wig’s 2024 Fall Show, Legally Bond!

Inspired by Efrén Olivares (C'05) and his talk on "Zero Tolerance: Journeys Through Family Separation and US Immigration Policy" at Penn in September 2023, Areli Martinez Pizano started a bi-weekly series titled "Immigration Series" to continue the conversation about undocumented immigrants in the United States. The topic for the series changes each week, highlighting things like implicit bias, cultural loss, mixed-family status, and dual identity. These conversations are open to everyone interested in immigrant rights, undocumented immigrants, and what it means to be an "American" in this country.
Risk and DEI chairs will meet with department partners to discuss how risk and DEI plays into Halloween Weekend.
Are your 8th grade jeggings still loose? Did your bbl appointment fall through? Do you spend multiple hours a week squatting in Pottruck, all for you to still be able to fit through narrow doorways?
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, Ass Pro Shops is the place for you! For a limited time only, this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Ass Pro Shops has a pop-up location right here, on Penn’s campus!
We know you may feel uncomfortable discussing your cardboard ass, but it’s time to turn the other cheek and trust the pros. Get in touch with our voluptuous, bunda specialists at Without a Net’s fall show, Ass Pro Shops, to learn more about how you can grow big and juicy.
At our shop, we are determined to help Penn’s students become, as Ben Franklin once said, “dummy thicc.” You can finally get an ass that will make you the literal gravitational center of every party, and your overwhelmingly large cake will become a campus landmark more photographed than the Love sign. So, whadda ya say, cheeky champ? Come watch improv that will leave both your hands and cheeks clapping.
