Evil is in the Eye of the Beholder (Making Workshop)

The concept of the evil eye revolves around the belief that certain individuals possess the ability to cast a malevolent gaze, intentionally or unintentionally, bringing harm or misfortune to others like illness, accidents, or general bad luck. Different cultures have developed their own methods to ward off the evil eye, such as the Nazar, an eye-shaped amulet found in many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures. The evil eye remains a fascinating aspect of human folklore, showcasing the universal human desire to protect oneself from negativity. After a short presentation on the history of this art form by Jennifer Wegner, Curator of the Museum’s Egyptian Section, students will view Evil Eyes from the Museum collection and design their own protective jewelry.

Making Workshops are Museum-sponsored events that encourage Penn undergraduate and graduate students to become more familiar with the Museum’s collection by getting their hands involved. These events provide a fun and educational setting to promote social interaction and engage students with artifacts and ethnographic objects.
