Prioritizing…When Everything Seems Important!

By Barbara Hewitt

With Thanksgiving behind us, the semester is winding down with less than two weeks of classes left. At this point in the semester, I often hear from students who are stressed about balancing the postgraduate job or internship search with the myriad of things they still have to finish up for classes…papers, presentations, finals…It seems there isn’t enough time to do it all.

My advice is to take a deep breath and prioritize. Although landing a job or internship offer is important, keep in mind that your first and most important role right now is that of student. Much of your final grades for classes will probably be determined in the coming few weeks and your time is likely better spent writing papers and studying for finals than devoting an inordinate amount of time to job search activities at this point in the semester. If you find yourself overwhelmed with your “to do” list, give yourself permission to step back from your job or internship search and focus on your school work for the next few weeks. Hiring tends to slow down during the holiday season, so now is a great time to focus on school work and plan to ramp up your job or internship search with the start of the New Year in January.

Good luck to all of you in the final few weeks of the semester!
