2009 Luncheon


2nd Annual PGWISE Graduate Alumnae-Student Luncheon

This is a great opportunity for current graduate students and science alumnae to connect, and to share wisdom, experience, and passion about careers in science. We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Joan Lau ( BSE'92, WG'08). Thanks to GSEG and the Trustees' Council of Penn Women, this event is free for all participants. So far, over 50 alumnae and graduate students from a broad range of industries, fields, and programs have registered to attend the luncheon. More about Dr. Joan Lau , our keynote speaker:

Dr. Joan Lau, Eng92, WG08. Joan is currently a Director of Business
Development for Merck's Vaccines and Infectious Diseases division.
Previously she has had roles in project management and portfolio
management, with responsibilities for managing Merck's neuroscience
pipeline. Prior to Merck, Joan was responsible for developing hip
prosthetics and surgical tools at Zimmer, an orthopedic device
manufacturing company. She has served on the boards of Penn Alumni,
PennGALA (Penn's LGBT alumni association), the Penn Engineering Alumni
Society, and is a member of the Trustees' Council of Penn Women. In
2006, Joan received Penn's Young Alumni Award of Merit, the University's
highest honor for its graduates. Joan received her undergraduate degree
in bioengineering from Penn and her doctoral degree in medical
neuroscience from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.


Parking/Public Transit Information:

Penn is convenient to the SEPTA regional rail and the Market-Frankfort elevated line, as well as many bus lines. For stops, connections, and train times SEPTA plan-my-trip is helpful.

Abundant street parking is available along Walnut Street from 31st to 34th Streets, and along 33rd St from Spruce to Market. Current meter rates are $1.50/hr, quarters only.

The closest free parking is available in Penn lot #45. To enter this lot, take Chestnut to 31st Street. Turn right on 31st Street; at the end of 31st Street, turn right on Jones Way, then an immediate left ( follow the signs for the Levy Tennis Pavilion/Bowers Field/WXPN parking) . Drive along a fence-lined access road to the first right into Levy Tennis Pavilion. Turn left to reach lot #45. Stairs from the lot will bring you up next to Franklin Field.
