Inspired by Efrén Olivares (C'05) and his talk on "Zero Tolerance: Journeys Through Family Separation and US Immigration Policy" at Penn in September 2023, Areli Martinez Pizano started a bi-weekly series titled "Immigration Series" to continue the conversation about undocumented immigrants in the United States. The topic for the series changes each week, highlighting things like implicit bias, cultural loss, mixed-family status, and dual identity. These conversations are open to everyone who is interested in immigrant rights, undocumented immigrants, and what does it mean to be an "American" in this country.

Michael Karam (he/him, C'17), originally from Lebanon, is a second year law student at American University Washington College of Law working towards becoming an international human rights lawyer. His favorite class at Penn was the Translation of Poetry and Poetry of Translation with Taije Silverman, and his favorite academic experience was researching LGBT identities in translation in Lebanon as a Penn Humanities Fellow.
After graduation, Michael worked as a project manager for a legal translation company. Drawn to mission-driven work, he then joined an international development nonprofit organization doing communications. He spent some time in Ecuador and Zambia documenting the experience of refugees in protracted settings. Later, he worked for The GroundTruth Project, a journalism nonprofit organization, helping expand Report for America and launch Report for the World, service programs that match journalists with newsrooms that need them to report on undercovered issues. He's also volunteered with HIAS PA, Respond Crisis Translation, Amnesty International, and Bottom Line. These days, Michael knits and bikes in his free time.
